Events play a significant role in the liveability, lifestyle and image of the Gold Coast while providing benefits to the city’s economy.
The Gold Coast has seen exceptional success in recent years in attracting major events to the city and has earned the region a reputation as a global events destination.
However, this is just the start of the journey with the City of Gold Coast aiming to boost the number of major events held in the city, leveraging the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to evolve the city’s reputation as a major event host.

Magic Millions | Gold Coast Turf Club | 6 January – 17 January
An intensive week of racehorse sales, attracting the who’s who of the racing industry to the Gold Coast Turf Club.The social highlight is the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday, which features the richest race in Queensland. A classic Gold Coast summer event, tailor made for buyers, punters and fashionistas.
Sand Safari | Surfers Paradise | 10 February – 26 February
The Surfers Paradise foreshore and some other locations around town become a sand and sea inspired art gallery during this weeklong event. It features the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, a sand trial across the city, along with sand art activities and workshops.
QLD Surf Life Saving Championships | North Kirra | 10 March – 12 March
The 2017 Queensland Surf Lifesaving Championships see more than 2,000 youth, seniors and masters competitors from all across Queensland line up to contest the surf, sand and each other in their quest for state glory.
Quiksilver and Roxy Pro | Snapper Rocks | 14-25 March
Witness world-class surfing on world-class waves (if the swell is right!) at Snapper Rocks, the leading right hand point break in the southern hemisphere. The first stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour, this event sees the world’s top 34 males and top 18 females battle it out in a spectator sport not to be missed.
Australian Surf Life Saving Championships | North Kirra | 25 March – 2 April
The 2017 Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships run across nine days, with more than 7,000 surf life savers from 313 surf clubs competing in over 400 events for all ages.

Bleach* Festival | Gold Coast – city-wide | 31 March – 16 April
Bleach* Festival drenches the Gold Coast with a three-week, high-energy, action-packed parade of live music, beach concerts, theatre, performing arts, film and fun. Bleach* Festival HQ is the Southern Gold Coast but satellite events throughout the Northern Gold Coast spread the best of Bleach* across the length and breadth of the city.
Jewel Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial and Jewel ITU World Triathlon Gold Coast | Southport Broadwater Parklands | 8 April – 9 April
World class triathletes descend on the Gold Coast in 2017 to battle it out in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Series. With the best triathletes in the world competing on the Saturday, age group athletes will get the chance to test their own limits in the Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial on Sunday. The line-up includes a packed entertainment schedule for the whole family to enjoy.
Gold Coast Film Festival | Gold Coast – city-wide | 19 April – 30 April
Walk the red carpet on opening night alongside actors, filmmakers and film crew. Learn from Australia’s leading producers, writers and directors at intimate seminars and workshops. At the Gold Coast Film Festival, you will be captivated by internationally acclaimed dramas, comedies and genre films, locally made indie gems, engaging documentaries, family features, anime and the scariest horror films. With more than 80 film and film related events in eight different locations, this festival is a celebration of film and film making from one of Australia’s top film destinations – the Gold Coast.
Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival | Broadbeach | 18 May – 20 May
Blues on Broadbeach is one of Australia’s largest free music festivals spanning four bluesy days and nights, with a unique, village-like atmosphere and relaxed ambience. The free and non-ticketed event nurtures Australian talent as well as providing a stage for international acts.
Sudirman Cup, World Team Badminton Championships | Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre | 21 May – 28 May
For the first time in history, the prestigious 2017 Total BWF Sudirman Cup will be held on the Gold Coast. This event is the world mixed team badminton championship which takes place every two years. There are five matches in every round: men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The Cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia.
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show | Sanctuary Cove | 25 May – 28 May
One of the most popular Gold Coast events, this four day show boasts more than 400 exhibitors. At this venue, you’ll come across Australian products as well as international products from Italy, China, Japan, UAE, India, the USA and the UK – exquisite boat varieties.
Cooly Rocks On | Southern Gold Coast | 7 June – 11 June
The biggest 50s and 60s nostalgia festival in Australia! More than two kilometres of rock ‘n roll, Rockabilly, swing music and 1,000 hot rods, custom cars and classic vehicles lining the stunning beachfront of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads all over two huge weeks.
Australian Open Bowls | Broadbeach Bowls Club | 10 June – 23 June
The World’s Biggest Bowls Festival will again hit the sunny Gold Coast – the lawn bowls capital of Australia – in 2017. With $250,000 in prize money and a freshly renovated venue ready for the Commonwealth Games, this competition will see plenty of people ready to roll up.
Gold Coast Airport Marathon | Southport Broadwater Parklands | 1 July – 2 July
Australia’s premier road race attracts more than 27,000 participants of all ages and abilities. The scenic course is considered one of the flattest and fastest courses in the world and the time of year usually boasts excellent weather conditions for running.
Broadbeach Country Music Festival | Broadbeach | 28 July – 30 July
Centred around the pristine beachfront of Broadbeach, this free festival sees a perfect mix of board shorts and banjos, surf boards and steel guitars as country music’s finest assemble for three days and nights of classic entertainment. The Broadbeach Country Music Festival celebrated its inaugural year in June 2013 with 20,000 attending over the three days. In June 2014, the second annual Festival was held and more than 35,000 people boot scooted into Broadbeach for the event.
SWELL Sculpture Festival | Southern Gold Coast | 8 September – 17 September
Currumbin Beach transforms into a vibrant outdoor gallery with Queensland’s largest, free outdoor exhibition SWELL Sculpture Festival. Open all hours, you can enjoy twilight walks, informative artist talks, discover new perspectives, wander through the Swell Smalls Gallery or participate in artist master classes and children’s’ workshops. The artworks are lit at night for a totally different perspective.
Griffith Opera on the Beach | Coolangatta | 21 Sept – 30 Sept
Opera on the beach is set to transform Coolangatta into an Egyptian wonderland with a special production hitting the shoreline in September. Opera Australia is returning to the Gold Coast with its special production of Aida, promising fireworks of the vocal and the pyrotechnic kind, colourful costumes and even local surf life savers getting in on the action. A royal love triangle, a fight for freedom and the famous ‘Triumphal March’ will light up the sky when Aida comes to the beach in 2017. It’s a night at the theatre, re-imagined for the kind of evening where you couldn’t bear to go inside.
Australian University Games | Gold Coast – city-wide | 24 September – 29 September
These games are recognised as a perfect opportunity to provide university athletes, many of whom are of Olympic standard, to compete against each other in a national multi-sport event. The event attracts more than 8,000 participants each year. Off the sporting field, an action-packed, week-long social program complements the sporting activities and enhances the experience. Sports on offer include; athletics, AFL, badminton, golf, volleyball, hockey, cycling, sailing, swimming, tennis and cricket.

Gold Coast 600 | Main Beach | 20 October – 22 October
Known as the Gold Coast’s biggest party, the Gold Coast 600 sees the V8 Supercar Championship drivers battle through one of the world’s toughest street circuits to claim the ultimate endurance racing title. If the day time action isn’t enough for you, the entertainment continues into the evenings.

Coolangatta Gold | Coolangatta Beach | 7 October – 8 October
The Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold is one of the most challenging endurance races in surf sports. The iconic event will return to the Gold Coast in 2015 over the weekend of October 7 and 8. It is open to the public and consists of a 33.6 km Short Course and a 41.8 km Long Course race. The multi-disciplinary course combines swimming, running, board paddling and surf skiing. Take it on as an individual or a team and challenge yourself.

Australian PGA Championships | RACV Royal Pines | December
This is the PGA of Australia’s flagship event, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia. The tournament honour roll features an incredible list of past champions including Adam Scott (2013) Greg Chalmers (2014 & 2011), Peter Senior (2010) and Geoff Ogilvy (2008). Staged at the stunning RACV Royal Pines, the Australian PGA Championship is a festival of golf, where everyone plays!\
